That's right, I live in an urban/suburban environment, which means buying a diesel is socially and environmentally immoral. Until I can buy biodiesel at the pump I will never be tempted by such an engine.

That is the temptation of the Porsche, but it is really quite a lot more money that the RRS or the Q7. 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI Grey/Black Int.

Good review Andrew.... Porsche are producing a diesel Cayenne soon, so if you do end up buying one you'll have to get rid of it before the range is sullied by such an engine

Well according to the dealership and the update calendar I saw from Stuttgart (could all be lies of course) there is nothing planned in that direction. The calendar went to 2010.

Problem is that practically all Diesel SUVs fail the CO2 limit, and if they bring out the full testing (as the German TUV has been suggesting for years) then they will add particulate emission and much more aggressive acceleration/deceleration cycles, which will then increase dramatically the "official" environmental impact of diesel engines. Some European towns are considering banning all diesels from Urban environments.

The benefit of diesel is low consuption at low to medium loads, at high loads and high revs the diesel engine (any diesel) is a disaster of inefficiency. Therefore in extraurban and motorway use the diesel is a good choice, in urban environments the diesel is a disaster. 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI Grey/Black Int.

One of the guys on the D3 forum chopped his in for the 420 GL and had a terrible time with it, but I can't remember why, he is back in a D3. I should think the 420 ML is pretty good too they are pretty quick too. DS3 TDV6 HSE

I have rented several ML's over the years, especially when visiting my mother in Bavaria in the midst of winter. I must say almost all models I have driven have been a disappointment. Which is why I haven't even included it in our list of possible choices.

BMW have been off my list for two reasons, I absolutely hate the I-drive system (and the indicators), and I don't like the way that other British drivers treat BMW owners. 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI Grey/Black Int.

I like the X5 and as i already own a FFRR was i thinking of getting an X5 or Touareg

The Porche is to expensive for what it is, the RRS is just a D3 (and the quality is not near a FFRR) a Q7 is a big allroad (which i already had) and the merc is just plane boring

And yes it will be a diesel as i do everyday about 120 miles.

2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Stornoway Grey

In Autocar magazine this week they pit a Cayenne GTS against a BMW M5 Touring....................... the M5 comes out best but it is quite a close run thing. The Cayenne costs £54k compared to the £68k of the M5, but then if you were to bring the Cayenne to the same standard spec as the M5 then the Cayenne would cost in excess of the M5.
The GTS really is a stripped out car - you want Bi-Xenons then you pay extra, no cruise (it's extra), aircon is extra, an auto gearbox is extra, in fact everything that you would take for granted on an RRS costs extra on the Cayenne........................... it even LOOSES the air suspension of the the GT and Turbo models. A Carbon Footprint is the mark a lump of coal makes when it's dropped on the ground.
