Diesel Prices

Just been reading this, can't see it how it would send prices soaring as forecourt diesel is just more refined, it all basically starts at the same point in the cracking process.

How much are you paying in the UK now for Diesel, when i left it was around the 90 pence mark. It has leapt in price in Oz, its now 76P a litre (local garage rates i saw today), when i first got here it was about 50 pence a litre, so 50% hike in just 2 years. yet another Pommie living in Sydney

Of course, we have approx 75% tax on fuel, so, we seem more insulated than lower tax countries as our price rises are smaller as a percentage. Range Rover Sport SC - Java / Tasmods / Skirts

Biodiesel

I'm going to start making biodiesel. I can do it for about 9p/litre and I can make and use 2500 litres/year, legally without paying anything in tax.
My RRS is petrol so no help there, and I guess for vehicles within the warranty period, only 5% biodiesel can be used. But I do have a 21 yr old diesel Defender, a Renault Grand Scenic diesel and a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso diesel which will all run on it. So my fuel savings could be quite substantial.
I run another business that generates waste cooking oil, which is my raw material for free. Normally you have to pay someone to take this away for recycling, so now I will not only save on fuel costs but also overheads on waste disposal too. It's cleaner and better for the environment so middle finger up to the GREEN Brigade. Mr. Green
Not sure how long Brown will allow this as it's a glaringly obvious loss of revenue for him, and it's not like the government to give us anything (unless you're an illegal immigrant).
Anyway, when I get up and running, I'll post on the forum to let you know how it goes. Thumbs Up

Agreed - I suppose nobody has really attempted here yet due to the general age of people's cars but they've been running that old Merc on 5th gear on chip fat for a couple of years now with no problems, so it obviously works Thumbs Up

You can do it on the cheap and use any old containers, pipework, buckets, fittings etc. that you have lying around the garage/workshop. Chip oil is cheap from Cash & Carrys, or free from restaurants/chip shops. (They normally have to pay to get rid of the stuff). You can either use the oil mixed with diesel (50/50 is about the max) or you can make biodiesel. The oil has to be filtered and cleaned if it's used.
Personally I'm going to get a FuelPod from www.greenfuels.co.uk
It's 2500 pounds +VAT, but I think it will be worth it in the long run as I eventually intend to get all diesel vehicles, and a diesel generator. I get my chip oil for free. I'll have to buy methanol, and a few other ingredients. I already have premises in which I can set up the Pod and my energy costs will be minimal. The FuelPod can make 60 litres of Biodiesel in 4 hrs or so. It's an automatic process with about 20 mins hands on. The costs with the required additives is 9p/litre. Using chip oil mixed 50/50 with diesel costs are obviously 1/2 the price of diesel - 55p??
I'm going to give it a try anyway, and if it goes pear shaped or Brown starts taxing it the same as hydrocarbon diesel, then it's not a huge amount of money to have invested. Hopefully, it will have paid for itself by then anyway. Whistle
My aim is to get a pre 1972 Tax Exempt diesel Range Rover or Land Rover Hybrid. Insurance is 90 quid/yr, road tax is free and fuel is 9p/litre. (Motoring as it was in the 1940's).
If I can put a TDV8 engine and a RRS interior in it, so much the better!!! Very Happy
Happy tax avoidance guys!
