Alloy Wheel Problem

Hi All,

I have covered 1600 miles in my RRS TDV8 since early Dec 07 and there is a build up on the alloy wheels of what can only be called metal filings that wont come off.

It seems obvious that this is a result of breaking and the break pads/discs wearing, but the problem is this stuff wont come off unless I use something slightly abrasive thereby marking the alloy - I have tried the usual wheel cleaners such as Wonder Wheels etc with a strong brush but the filings seem to be embedded into the alloy - any suggestions would be welcome Question

If it's all literally embedded in the alloy (whatever it is), then looks like the only solution is to have them refurbed. There's any number of independents that will do this for you.... Wicked Wheels refurbed mine before selling it on, for the princely sum of £60 per wheel. Did a great job too Very Happy

Kind of think after 1600 miles LR will be getting me a new set as there must be a fault - will ask them to check it out and report back asap Exclamation Gas, grass or ass - nobody rides for free!!

Hi Japseroony,

I use valeters clay to remove metal specs from my wheels.

If you wander into a bodyshop supply (car paint , filler and such to the trade) and ask for a clay bar.

A bar should cost about £20 but can be cut into several pieces and used again and again.

you then use the clay with soapy water and the clay (like plasticene) picks the iron bits out of the paint.

PM me if you need more details. If you are near the midlands I can probably find you a piece of clay.

BEWARE.....The dealer will probably just soak the wheel in something corrosive, make sure they don't trash your wheels.

Any Q's just pm me.

Good luck.

She is in for an inspection tomorrow as not only are the metal filings sticking and seem to be embedded in the alloy, Strathstones Durham seem to think there is a fault with the alloy or lacker as the wheels are scratching very badly for no apparent reason Big Cry Gas, grass or ass - nobody rides for free!!

Mine are doing this too after 8k/6months, I'm going to shove it back at the dealer and get a refurb/replacement under warranty.

It only took a few hours to get mine all scratched, and I only drove the car onto a grassy track to get some pictures, the 20" wheels are not so tough Sad Sons of dogs come eat flesh

I live just outside Newcastle Upon Tyne and would welcome any input. When I went to the dealer last week they said one of the wheels had a fault so I was thinking they would come back on Saturday with some sort of answer etc but all they did was clean them and give the vehicle back to me.

I called them and complained and they said to take it back again but its a 58 mile round trip and time aint always on my side, but I will not let this drop Mad Gas, grass or ass - nobody rides for free!!
