I work in the Land Rover Off Road Capability team based at the design centre at Gaydon, Warwickshire, England. I'm currently doing a "real" customer based study into usage of the Terrain Response (TR) system so it would be great to get your comments, particularly anything you really like or hate about TR and any suggestions for improving TR.

Great idea... come on folks, I'm sure you'd all like to be part of the next generation TR  

I love it. Did use a few times in the Alps the snow mode and it makes you drive in a much more relax attitude. With my old P38 range rover, on snow and ice, you had some much to do (speed, playing with the gearbox...). Also, did enjoy an off road tour with LandRover Experience around the Eastnor Castle and the mud mode is just amazing!

Nice to see that LR is interested in our opinion.

TR - I think it's really good. Compared to my days of pulling/pushing the red and yellow knobs and wondering if it had changed mode.

I have only used the snow mode on my sport thus far. But it does what it says on the tin.

Do you think you could persuade one of the Designer/Techs at Gaydon to give us an update for the rattling anti roll bar/front suspension issues that most of have had on brand new low mileage sports  MY08 RRS TDV8 HSE, Stornoway Grey, Ebony and Zabrano, sunroof, hybrid tv, premium ICE, rear E diff, privacy glass, side steps, mud flaps, S/Grey mirror covers, Venture shield,tasmods, smoked indicators, Larini sports exhaust, etc, etc.

Good to see someone from LR asking for customer feedback!

Terrain response is great- once you learn to apply it properly. Seeing that you actually work in the off-road capability team Dan, I'd suggest that you give future models have the option of keeping increased ground clearance at speed, rather than automatically dropping at a certain speed. I hate slowing down on some of the sandy/gravel roads here that have a 'hump' between tyre tracks and being overtaken by the enemy (landcruisers).

I also suggest you get hold of the latest landcruiser and take and improve the good bits from the drivetrain/suspension design and make sure LR stays no. 1!! Toyota even have the nerve to claim "it surpasses the Range Rover" in their ads here and in Oz.

Also, please, please make it reliable and remove the Dynamic Response Severe Knocking no cost option feature.

We love the RRS but certain things need to be sorted.

Thanks for asking (are you AKA Loz from the d-web thread?) I wish there was a way to manually select extended AND super extended offroad heights - say at speeds under 5 mph to avoid trouble - rather than leaving that "choice" to the car when I am already grounded, losing traction and/or hitting something. If LR offered some extra armor - skid plates, rock sliders - for the undercarriage of the Sport I wouldn't care so much, but... There should also be a manual way to truly and completely disengage DSC and ETC. I have been in some precarious situation on real steep and slippery inclines needing all the thrust I could get, and even with DSC turned off you could tell the traction control system was still kicking in and killing my momentum. The offroad height should be selectable at speeds higher than 30 mph, I'd say 50 mph would be more useful on the many rutted roads we have in the deserts here. It's easy to exceed 30 mph on those roads. And a small annoyance: The outside temperature readout disappears when you are in any offroad mode...

How do you get superextended? other than RTFM

You can't get to superextended unless the car has "decided" to put you in extended mode first. That's my beef with the system. If you are in extended offroad mode (the display will tell you) then you just push the suspensions "Up" button to access superextended. 

But surely people would then go on until they were stuck again. IMO better to be able to select SE mode once grounded, but then I probably don't do the sort of driving you do! Anyway I'm OT so sorry! DS3 TDV6 HSE

One useful addition to terrain response would be manual activation of the rear diff-lock.

Something which i feel is important is not to rely too much on electronic wizardry (the level of electronic intervention on the RRS and D3 is spot-on) and to make sure that wheel articulation, suspension travel and ground clearance are not compromised. Get the combination right and the car will be awesome.

I really like TR and sed it in the sand, on the snow and in bad roads with big stones.
I did not liked the sand because i have had the impression that i nearly got stuck and i was afraid wheni put a lot of gas and that i could only hear the engine and the wheels were not moving.
Snow is perfect
My general impression is that the availalbe positions are too limited and and i never know if i have a good position.
I would prefer to have 10 to 20 positions that are all separate ie one for grass, on for sand, one for mud, one for snow, one for ice one for stones etc.......

PS : i hope the new RR wil come out soon with something else than that ugly 2002 bmw steal chassis

On the suspension part, the high speed need to achieve the lower suspension mod is to high... On long highway trip, I usually end up driving very fast to get the car lower and then reduce speed to a more "normal" one.

For people who are wondering what I am talking about: when you drive above 160km/h (+/- from memory), the car will lower itself between access and normal suspension and stay there until speed is reduce under 90km/h or acround it. TDV6 HSE 07YM, Stornoway Grey
