This is driving me nuts.

When I put the seat belts on the kids in the rear. te system seems to be over sensetive to locking due to intertia. Worse of all is that they once the sysem that has activiated in acts like a ratchet so that the seat belt can go in but wont realease anymore.

The only way to reset this is to fully release the seat belt so that there is no slack. This is a nightmare as when you are on a trip and the kids are messing around as they do, they activate the system and are gradually restricted and restricted until they cant move. I then have to pull over to sort the probelm out.

I dont encourage my kids to move around in the car but they may lean forward to geta drink etc.

Land Rover told me that this is the way it is designed. I have never owned a car in my life with seat belts that operate like this.

Does anybody else have this problem?

If so did they tell you the same story or fix it?

Could this be because of the Automatic Locking Mechanism?

The passenger seat belts have a special locking mechanism which retains large items securely. To use:
1 Place the item on the seat.
2 Pull the seat belt around the item, using both the lap and shoulder parts of the belt.
3 Fasten the seat belt.
4 Pull on the shoulder part of the belt to unreel all of the remaining belt. This will engage the automatic locking feature which only allows the belt to retract.
5 Allow the seat belt to retract onto the item (a clicking sound will confirm that the mechanism has engaged).
6 Ensure that there is no slack in the seat belt by pulling upwards on the shoulder belt immediately above the item. The item will now be held firmly in position by the belt.

When the seat belt is released and is allowed to fully retract, the seat belt locking mechanism reverts to normal operation.

I find this is a great feature.
Although the dog takes a dim view of it

Mine only engage the ratchet after they have been pulled out ALL the way, to the end stop, which trips the ratchet.
If they are not pulled out all the way they act like a normal belt.

If yours are doing this at all times ( without being pulled all the way out ) then they are faullty

The belts in my 2001 D2 and the RRS behave the same way (ie ratchet back once fully extended), the rear belts in the RRS aren´t as long as in the D2 however. I think it is to enable firm fixing of belt-secured car seats - otherwise they would flop around....

I guess the idea behind them locking when fully extended is good. I just wasnt aware of it.

I will have to test to see if this is happening without the belts being fuly extended though, if this is the case it sounds like it could be fault.

Well I swapped the car and got a new one but not for this reason. As stated here it appeares to be a "feature".

The kids are now aware of it and are careful, but now and agin thet end up pullong the belt and iit strat to ratchet back. Inch by inch, until they cant move at all. I end up having to stop if we are on a long journer and sort it out.

In my opinion if they wanted this feature the belts should be alot longer so as to avoid the risk of this happening through everyday use.

Couple of reasons.

Suspension noise from rear,
dent on dashboard
scratch on bumper when delivered,
scratch on door handle when delivered


Lookers were good and ageeed to swao the car, I paid a bit extra for the TDV8 fro the TDV6 I had to begin with and got 6 months free motering.

This did require me to have a long face to face with the manager of the place though who was good, I was not impressed with some of the other staff though.

Mine is going in next week for a service and they'll look at the seat belts.

it is a feature of the car. Believe it is due to european regulation with baby and infant car seat in order to keep them in good position TDV6 HSE 07YM, Stornoway Grey
