New Tyre Manufacturer for LR

Was in my local dealership yesterday and just happened to notice that all the new RRS in the showroom on 20" wheels had Pirelli Scorpion Zero tyres fitted.

I had Scorpions on mine from the factory too... they lasted me about 15k before needing replacement, but that was me driving somewhat enthusiastically. But as with TB's, mine were on 19s so not sure if the 20" variant is any better/worse.

So how come the change of manufacturer TB Question Is it purely down to a deal on price for LR Question Or could these be better tyres than the Continentals ie. less outer shoulder wear Question MY08 RRS TDV8 HSE, Stornoway Grey, Ebony and Zabrano, sunroof, hybrid tv, premium ICE, rear E diff, privacy glass, side steps, mud flaps, S/Grey mirror covers, Venture shield, tasmods, smoked indicators, Larini sports exhaust, etc, etc.

There was never a single supplier anyway... back when I still had mine, RRSs were leaving the factory in both Pirellis and Contis. Luck of the draw as to what you got, I think. TB might have a specific answer...

No, you've got it just about right Shmoogle.

Land Rover use three or four different makes of tyre, it just depends what type of tyre is spec'd to your vehicle.

You sometimes get really picky customers who won't have certain types of tyre, but normally customers are happy with whatever they get.

I used to know a couple of people that wouldn't have Goodyear tyres on their motor, because Goodyear sponsored Wolverhampton Wanderers. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. I've just got new the 20" scorpion tyres on my TDV8 (3 weeks old). You are correct they have changed. I had a TDV8 earlier this year on the Continental tyre. I can't tell any difference in the ride, but I do believe is quieter on the Motorway - people say they can hear me know on the phone on the Motorway.

Its unfortunate because I bought two new extra spare wheels and tyres with the conitental so not sure what I'll do with these now. Not sure if I can put the Pirelli and Conti's together if I have a puncture.

The Scorpion picture on the Pirelli tyres looks neat! 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8, Stornoway Grey

It really depends how vain you are exalld. There wont be any problems using both Scorpions and Conti's at the same time, apart from the looks.

Alternatively, you could sell the Conti's on ebay. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

I faced this scenario once and the local tyre emporium suggested that it would be acceptable to mix mfrs as long as you kept each axle the same... i.e. Pirellis front, Contis back etc..

Yep, That is exactly what I was told too.
Never mix tread patterns on same Axle but different patterns front and rear is ok. Range Rover Sport - 2.7 TDV6 HSE - Java Black - Privacy Glass - Dealer Superchipped - a set of swanky TASMOD sill plates & Body Colour Matched SC Grill & Side Vents. Smile

Oh well who ever gets my now departed TDv6 will find that it has a Pirelli as the spare and 4 Conti's to run on as I had to replace one tyre and the tyre fitters DIDN'T tell me about mixing them - I just asked them to fit the spare onto the wheel that had the damaged tyre on it and put the new one under the back as the spare. The guys at in London who took the car reckoned that they would probably be fitting a set of 19" wheels/tyres to it anyway so I suppose it won't be a problem in that case!

My Tdv8 is on Pirelli's which is a tyre I have never really liked - I found the Goodyear Wrangler HP M&S tyre a great tyre for modern Land Rovers, quiet, good offroad and with a long life.
These Pirellis can only be better than the Conti's which scared the living daylights out of me in snow- the first fall of which will reveal if the Pirellis are any better at handling the white stuff! A Carbon Footprint is the mark a lump of coal makes when it's dropped on the ground.

Some of us will have to make a decision on tyres this year as the Conti sport contact is being phased out and being replaced with Conti cross contact UHP tyres for 100% on road use. Info taken from Contis web site Exclamation

With the amount of summer we get in this country I'm not sure its worth having so called summer tyres. MY08 RRS TDV8 HSE, Stornoway Grey, Ebony and Zabrano, sunroof, hybrid tv, premium ICE, rear E diff, privacy glass, side steps, mud flaps, S/Grey mirror covers, Venture shield, tasmods, smoked indicators, Larini sports exhaust, etc, etc.

My FFRR and the Freelander that I had before it both ran on Goodyears Wrangler HP M&S tyres - they gave great grip in all conditions including offroad and they wore well as well - both cars were sold with about 30k miles on them and the original OEM tyres still had plenty of tread left. The V6 went into Charles Hursts with about 6mm of tread left all round and had done 21000 miles on the original tyres, I don't know if they changed them for new ones but there was still loads of miles left in those tyres!
I just wish I could get BF Goodrich AT's to fit the Sport...................... the Defender went for 58000 miles on it's original set and I sold them on with 5mm of tread left to somebody who didn't use their Landy for offroading A Carbon Footprint is the mark a lump of coal makes when it's dropped on the ground.

Australia 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Zermatt Silver

In my Scoob owning days, the WRX and STI's had P Zero's as standard footwear as part of the UK delivery, and to be honest they never provided the confidence to push the car to what it could do, far to hard a compound to give the type of traction most scoob owners would like. Many owners moved over to Yokohama at their own expense when purchasing the car, which had a far softer compound, ok faster wear, but road holding and traction far superior to the Pirelli's.

I am now looking to replace the Conti's that came with the Sport as new (the fronts are wearing quick and at 36K KM's), i have 255/55/R18 107V full rim on 10 spoke 18" alloys, i am thinking of looking for something with more offroad capability, yet not have to replace the wheels, wish me luck yet another Pommie living in Sydney
